Abstract: The physical and technological characteristics of a material determined by means of a tensile test depend upon the elastic properties of the testlng machine so that some corrections should be applied to achieve a high degree of accuracy. Equations are set up for the processes occurring in the specimen and the testing machine during a tensile test at a given crosshead speed. These equations show the dependence of the measured characteristics of a material upon the mechanical properties of the specimen and upon the elastic properties of the testing machine. The true deformation rate of the specimen may deviate from the deformation reite imposed by the testing machine (i. e. the crosshead speed) by more than 90% according to size and material of the specimen. The general terms "hard" and "soft" tensile testing machine are explained with the help of examples.
